Young American Awards (YAA) Program

 Program Overview
The Young American Awards Program is the signature event of the Western Connecticut Military Officers Association (WCMOA). It fulfills many of our chapter goals including love of country and our flag, supporting the constitutional government of the United States, and encouraging our promising students to become the leaders of tomorrow.

Each year, our members are proud to honor outstanding Fairfield County high school seniors who stand out from their peers in the following areas:

  1. Understanding and support of the US Constitution
  2. Patriotism
  3. Outstanding leadership potential
  4. Voluntary involvement in community service

School administrators of participating schools each select one student who best meets the above criteria. The selected student (now designated as a YAA nominee) then submits his/her information in an online application which includes a short endorsement of the candidate written by the school guidance counselor (or senior JROTC instructor at certain schools).

Once the application is completed and received by our committee, the nominee is invited with those from other schools to attend a ceremonial banquet in May in their honor. Their parents are invited to the banquet as guests of WCMOA to help us pay tribute to these fine young Americans.

At the banquet, a most impressive formal military affair, each nominee receives the YAA Award. Generous monetary scholarship awards are presented to top awardees with funds generated by members’ contributions, plus donations by local private and corporate sponsors. During the evaluation process the YAA selection committee considers academic achievements and awards, extra-curricular school service projects/athletic activities, leadership positions, voluntary community service work, patriotic efforts, college/military/career plans, and the nominee’s essay.

In keeping with the theme of the YAA Program, special attention is focused on the nominee’s leadership potential and patriotism.

 

To our Young American Awardees:
Congratulations on being selected by your high school administrators as an outstanding senior student who has demonstrated an interest in perpetuating the ideals of American democracy! The criteria used to select you as the YAA awardee include your demonstrated love of country, good leadership, principles and interest in spreading the concepts of our democracy through community service. You should be proud of this distinction! The men and women of the WCMOA look forward to meeting and honoring you at this year’s YAA banquet.You, along with the other Fairfield County awardees, are now eligible to compete for additional scholarship awards. The YAA Selection Committee will consider all the online submissions and chose the top winners. This site has been designed to assist you with this online process: The first step is to complete and submit the online YAA Candidate Information Form which includes a short essay of 250 words or less and a short biography to be published in the YAA banquet commemorative brochure and read publicly at the event.
The last step is to make your reservations for the YAA banquet. Each awardee receives three complimentary tickets. At the banquet, you will be presented a Certificate of Recognition and a copy of the booklet “Great American Documents.” In addition, the scholarship winners will be announced. Please note that you must be present to receive a cash scholarship award.
