CDR Kyle P. Durand

CDR Durand enlisted in the Navy in 1989 as a Nuclear Power Electrician’s Mate. In 1991, he accepted a direct appointment to the United States Naval Academy and graduated in 1995 with distinction. After completing Surface Warfare Officer School, CDR Durand was assigned to USS JOHN S. MCCAIN (DDG 56), where he served as the Main Propulsion Officer and First Lieutenant and participated in two deployments to the Persian Gulf region, a homeport shift to Yokosuka, Japan and numerous operations in the PACOM AOR.

CDR Durand was next assigned to Commander, Destroyer Squadron Five as the Weapons Officer. Shortly after the transfer, CDR Durand was selected into the Navy’s Law Education Program.

After graduating from the University of Southern California Law School in 2001, he attended Naval Justice School and was assigned to Naval Legal Service Office Northwest in Bremerton, Washington. While at NLSO NW, he served as a Legal Assistance Attorney, Defense Counsel, and Legal Assistance Department Head.

After a tour assigned to Fleet Information Warfare Center in Norfolk, Virginia as the Command Judge Advocate, he reported to the Office of the Judge Advocate General in Washington D.C. and served as a civil litigation attorney, defending the Navy from lawsuits in federal courts throughout the nation and acted as agency counsel for litigation related to the detainees held in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. In 2005, CDR Durand volunteered to deploy to Iraq as an Individual Augmentee and served as member of the staff of Commander, Multi-National Force Iraq.

CDR Durand left active duty in March of 2007 and served as the Executive Officer of the Region Legal Service Office Northwest Reserve unit before serving two active duty tours of 6 months and 3 months as the Executive Officer, Naval Legal Service Office Europe, Africa and Southwest Asia. In 2012, he reported to the Defense Institute of International Legal Studies, where he served as a staff instructor for two years, traveling around the world to teach developing nations’ military forces before
assuming the duties as the Executive Officer for the Reserve unit supporting the 4-star Commander of Naval Forces Europe and Naval Forces Africa.

He is entitled to wear the Surface Warfare Officer’s pin, Naval Parachutist Pin and his awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, six Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medals, two Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals and numerous unit, service and campaign awards.

CDR Durand is a member of the Washington, California and Washington D.C. bars and holds degrees from the United States Naval Academy (B.S.), the University of Southern California (J.D.), and the University of Washington (LL.M). CDR Durand is a business and tax attorney and founder of several companies, including The Precept Group, a unique small business-focused law and accounting firm in Redmond, Washington and OurDeal, an online software service for creating, sending and signing legal agreements. Providing cutting edge business management tools and techniques, he helps small business owners to navigate the complex and often confusing maze of financial and legal issues they face on a daily basis and to build businesses that provide the income, freedom and lifestyle they desire.

CDR Durand is an accomplished extreme sports competitor, including triathlon races on almost every continent in the world, the Iditarod bike race, loan bike trip from Canada to Mexico, loan run across the Grand Canyon and back, and the special military version of American Ninja Warrior.  He and his wife, Cynthia, volunteer their time helping train others in their home town of Seattle, WA.  Kyle can be found online at kyledurand.com.
