The move means that nearly 300,000 more military retirees across the nation are now exempt from state income tax.<\/p>\n<div id=\"content-adblock-63529e7765ad2\"><\/div>\n<p>This year, legislators in New Mexico, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Vermont and Virginia passed laws giving retirees in those states tax breaks based on their military service.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s how the legislation shapes up:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>New Mexico: Beginning in 2022, up to $10,000 of military retirement is tax free. That amount increases to $20,000 in 2023, and to $30,000 until at least 2026, according to a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.governor.state.nm.us\/2022\/03\/08\/governor-enacts-tax-cuts-for-new-mexico-seniors-families-and-businesses\/\">governor\u2019s press release<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Oklahoma: Military retirement income is fully tax free beginning in 2022, according to a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/oksenate.gov\/press-releases\/military-pensions-now-exempt-state-income-tax-sen-brenda-stanley-says-retirees-can#:~:text=OKLAHOMA%20CITY%20%E2%80%93%20A%20bill%20exempting,with%20the%202022%20tax%20year.\">state Senate press release<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Rhode Island: Military retirement income is fully tax free beginning in 2022, according to a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/governor.ri.gov\/press-releases\/governor-mckee-signs-veteran-and-military-related-legislative-package-highlighting\">governor\u2019s press release<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>South Carolina: Military retirement income is fully tax free beginning in 2022, according to a state\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.beaufortcountysc.gov\/news\/2022\/05\/south-carolina-governor-henry-mcmaster-signs-bill-into-law-exempting-military-retirement-pay--from-income-tax.html#:~:text=3247%20into%20law%20on%20Friday,with%20no%20earned%2Dincome%20cap.\">government press release<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Vermont: Beginning in 2022, up to $10,000 in retirement income is tax free for those with a gross income less than $50,000 for single filers or $65,000 for joint filers, according to a state\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/legislature.vermont.gov\/Documents\/2022\/Docs\/ACTS\/ACT138\/ACT138%20Act%20Summary.pdf\">legislature press release<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Virginia: In 2022, up to $10,000 in retirement pay is tax free for retirees 55 and older. That amount increases by $10,000 each year until 2025, when up to $40,000 is deductible, according to a state\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/budget.lis.virginia.gov\/get\/budget\/4623\/HB30\/\">assembly press release<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This leaves only California and the District of Columbia fully taxing military retirement income.<\/p>\n<div id=\"content-adblock-63529e7765caf\"><\/div>\n<p><strong>See:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.military.com\/benefits\/military-pay\/state-retirement-income-tax.html\">Military Retirement and State Income Tax<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Many states also exempt active-duty\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.military.com\/benefits\/military-pay\">military pay<\/a>\u00a0as well as social security benefits from income tax.
